Exterior Painting Complete

The exterior painting has mostly wrapped up. There is some touch up, and some clean up, and then it will be done. Here are the most recent pictures:
These are the before photos:
These are the inspiration photos:
This wonderful picture is from the Old House Colors website. We used Colonial Yellow stain for the body, which is mentioned by name in the 1910 Sherwin Williams Catalog.

This photo dates from 1911 and is copied from Robert Schweitzer's Bungalow Colors book.

We hope we did well.

Exterior Painting

Exterior painting is clearly a plastic-intensive process. The paint crew spent literally days masking and more masking, then they would spend an hour or two painting. It has been really interesting to watch the process.

To start, the painters went through and primed all the new wood. Then they pressure washed and scraped the old paint.

Next, they went through and masked the glass on the old windows. They also masked the yellow-stained shingles. They sprayed the wood mullions with the dark green paint. Then they went through and masked the entire window with a second layer of plastic, leaving the trim around the window exposed.

Next, they went through and sprayed the trim-work with the white paint we chose.

By this point, it was getting pretty eerie inside the house. Then, as expected, they wrapped up the white trim with MORE plastic.

They then went through and painted the yellow body paint. Here were the two paint samples they put up for us. The right hand sample is the yellow that matches the stained shingles; the left hand sample is 50% darker. We chose the darker yellow.

By this evening, the crew had started removing the layers of plastic and the house colors were starting to emerge.

Back Stairs are In

Sharon thought we were going to have a hard time hiding the heat pump, but with the new stairs towering over it, maybe we can come up with something. We probably would have put in smaller stairs, but this is what was required by code. Silly.
As a reminder, this is how it looked when we bought the house last year. Although that back deck was cute, it was too small to put any furniture on it. It was also not original; we pulled it off in an attempt to restore the rear profile of the house.

Siding Done!

Well, mostly done, anyway. There's a small portion on the back of the house around the back door that still needs to be finished. Not sure what the hang-up is there, but they've stopped working on the siding. Though, the front of the house is complete and is looking wonderful! There is still some restoration of the barge boards to do, then we're ready for paint. Most of this trimwork is going to be painted white. The siding on the bottom-half of the house will be painted yellow, to match the upper portion.

Cedar Shingles

Last week they got started on installing the stained shingles on the upper portion of the house. That yellow color is Colonial Yellow by Cabot Stain and is our new house color.
They're nearly done with two sides of the house.

Siding Progress

Wow, the siding is going really slow. We had no idea it took so long to put on those mitered corners. Funny thing is we didn't specifically ask for them. Sure, they look great, but our inspiration house had the corner boards so we probably would have been fine with those instead. It took two guys all week to make their way across the front of the house. Granted, there are a lot of corners on that first bit. Maybe it will speed up from here on out as there are fewer corners on the rest of the house. There's just one more bump-out on the back of the dining room.

At Last — Windows!

The windows arrived! It is exciting to get that unsightly plywood off the exterior of the house. Sharon believes we ordered Marvin Ultimate Double Hung Windows and Inserts to replace the old windows. It's hard to let the old wavy glass go from the upstairs but too many of the windows have cracked panes or have had the wavy glass replaced with modern smooth glass. Hopefully this will be a long term win in our reduced energy use.

The new windows are dark green (Evergreen) on the exterior and stain-grade douglas fir on the inside.

The exterior of the downstairs windows that aren't being replaced will be painted a matching color.

Yeah! We have windows on the front of the house! The siding is also very slowly marching across the front of the house. Those mitered corners are taking forever!

Siding Started

The CDR crew spent nearly half the day planning out the siding installation. The house is all marked up with lines and they should get a lot done tomorrow.

The hardwood floor installer came out and applied the first finishing coat, Bona Traffic, to the kitchen floor. We should be able to walk on the floor again, carefully, tomorrow. They won't be back to apply the second finishing coat until the end of the remodel. They'll apply the second coat on all of the main floor (both the new and refinished old floors) all at one time.

Next week is going to be exciting! They'll be finishing up repairing the woodwork in the dining and living rooms and also building our colonnades. Hopefully the rooms will soon be ready for staining.

Wrong Color

A very large delivery truck came out this morning to deliver our new roofing shingles. It was a neat truck that could lift the pallets right up onto the roof.

But when Sharon went out to take pictures she noticed those packages said the shingles were black. We ordered green! So, they turned around and took the pallets back off the roof and headed back to their warehouse. They'll be back in a few days with the right color. We're glad we noticed today instead of after they started installing them!

We also got a delivery of very long siding pieces.

We Have Walls!

The sheetrock went up throughout the house the last couple of days and it's starting to look like a house again, rather than a construction site. Though we're still really looking forward to windows! =)

The street appeal of the house is not so good now!

Undressing the House

Now that the noise and chaos inside the house is dying down, the team got started on stripping off the exterior siding. Just in time for more rain, unfortunately. The roof over the driveway is being restored to its original profile. The paint stripping team size has doubled, so they're making fast progress now. The dining room is looking awesome!

The roofer starts on Monday. Sheetrock starts on Wednesday.

Update on Tuesday afternoon. The house is not looking great right now.
