Pressure Washing Exterior Woodwork

Now that we've finished the sewing room, our next project is to finish staining the pergola and side fence. I regret not staining the wood for the fence before we built it, but the wood was just so pretty, it was tough to put an opaque white stain on it. Then, when we installed the pergola, it started raining while we were staining and we didn't get everything done — it's finally time.

Today, Jeff is working on pressure washing them so they're nice and clean before we start staining. Thanks Jeff!
Yeah, the yard got a little overgrown once we got rid of the chickens. We really didn't realize how much of the vegetation they prevented. Hopefully we'll get the yard cleaned up too. It's gotten pretty overgrown during the two years of neglect.

Ultimately, we plan to finish the floor of the pergola with a mix of urbanite (concrete chunks) and leftover salvaged bricks. Something like this. Maybe not that fancy. LOL

Path is Done!

While it could use some more tamping to drive more sand into the joints, the sand is so wet and clumpy that it's not really possible to finish this project completely until we have a few days of dry weather. Perhaps a couple weeks of rain will help do the job.

We therefore declare the path done enough to walk on and it should be fine until we get some dry weather.Jeff still has some more work he wants to do to shape those big dirt piles into planting beds, and there are several more plants to go into the ground, but we are mostly done with the front yard for the season.

New Life for Our Old Chimney

When we purchased the house last year, there was this chimney that extended all the way up through the house from the basement and quite a bit taller than the house. It was the chimney that was used for the cooking stove when the house was built in 1912. Well, we're not so strict about being "period" that we were willing to back up to a wood stove, so this chimney was superfluous. So we removed it, in order to claim the space it was occupying for the kitchen remodel.

Most of the brick went into the dumpster, unfortunately, because when the workers removed the old chimney, they simply dropped the bricks from the top down to the bottom. But we saved whatever we thought was in good enough shape to reuse. And that chimney was converted into this pile.

After many hours of cleaning and installing those bricks, that old chimney is starting a new life as our front path. We are getting really close to being done. We still have many of the odd-shaped edge pieces to cut, but we were tired, hungry and it was raining, so we decided to finish another day (hopefully tomorrow, if the weather cooperates).

More Progress on Path

Jeff and Sharon both had unfun birthdays this year. In June, on Sharon's birthday, we were organizing the garage. Yesterday, on Jeff's birthday, he got to cut and pound cement. Though, on the bright side, he got to use a big manly tool. The plan was for Jeff to cut a line in the cement so that when he broke the section next to it, it would break along that line. It mostly worked. Then Jeff went through with a sledge hammer and digging bar to break up the cement for removal.Jeff actually expected to get a bit further on this project yesterday, but it took so long to get the cement out of there.

This is where Jeff started this morning.Today we decided to find some help for Jeff; someone who could actually dig. We don't want to break Jeff.

Jeff and his helper, Buddy, got a lot done today. Actually, they got further than Sharon expected. They finished excavating the path area, laid down landscape mat, then put down 6 inches of gravel and used a rented plate compactor to compact it down. Then they put in snap lock edging, and filled it with an inch and half of sand. Then we started laying the bricks.
And we continued to do that until the bricks started to run out and the rain really started to pour.Obviously, we'll be cleaning bricks this weekend. We put down the cardboard in an attempt to keep the dog child off the sand; it probably won't work.

Path Progress

Jeff had a volunteer teaching gig today at noon, but he still got lots of digging done before he had to leave.Shasta was extra cute tromping around in the dirt with her booties on. (It's funny how she walks when she's wearing them.)Sharon appointed herself the task of calling around for the best prices for the gravel and sand and for the tool rental. Most everything should be ordered today and we should be set to have Jeff finish this project this week. Go Jeff!

Front Path Plan

If the weather cooperates this week, Jeff is going to put in the new front walk. Today we worked on layout and figuring out the amounts of gravel and sand we need to order. Hopefully tomorrow, he can start digging. We still need to clean a few grey bricks, but we're real close. We're actually planning to remove the existing cement and run the path all the way up to the front steps. But we need to borrow or rent a masonry saw and cut it along the new steps before Jeff starts pounding. It would be bad to mess up our newly installed front steps.

We're going to recycle some of the big chunks of old driveway to put in stepping stones across the planting strip to the sidewalk from the street. That way we can exit our cars without stepping onto the soggy ground and hopefully it will further reduce the mud tracking into the house.

Gray Bricks

Holy cow, these gray bricks are hard to clean!! Now we know we didn't get our money's worth. Sharon spent several hours cleaning bricks today and cleaned 39!! Seriously, only 39. This is Sharon's tiny "finished pile."We think the bricks are actually made from cement and they've got lots of pores that hold onto the failing mortar very well. Ironically, one of the best ways to clean the mortar off of them is to rub two bricks together, but they're about 5 pounds each and the muscles give out pretty quickly using that method.

And it's also hard to tell when you've removed all the mortar because the brick is basically the same color. So, this is a slow project and many of the bricks will no doubt be installed with some of the mortar residue still on them.

More Bricks to Clean

Obviously we love cleaning bricks, because we went and got more! We bought 300 gray bricks, still with mortar, from someone on craigslist today. Our poor pickup is groaning under the weight; it was maybe a bit much to transport in one load. We probably paid too much given that they still need to be cleaned, but Sharon went and got her heart set on having a pattern like this one for the path and back patio.

We were both pretty tired by the time we got home, so we'll be unloading tomorrow!

Outdoor Projects

Jeff worked hard today finishing up digging the last two rain gardens on the side of the house. He's almost there.Unfortunately, this huge rosemary plant was a bit of a fatality. Though, we are planning to root quite a few cuttings to plant elsewhere in the yard. While he worked on that project, Sharon slowly chipped away at the brick pile. She removes the mortar much more slowly than Jeff can, but she did manage to clean off almost 100 bricks. Our "cleaned" brick pile continues to grow. While our "dirty" brick pile is slowly shrinking. We're getting there.

Cleaning Bricks

Continuing his amazing productivity trend, Jeff (with some schlepping help from Sharon) spent about 3 hours scraping mortar off bricks today. We finally found the right tool and it makes this job much more doable. The package says it's a "Brick Set," which is basically a chisel designed for masonry. We think it's intended to break the bricks, but it works well at knocking mortar off them as well.

The bricks are looking very rustic and will likely look great in our new path up to the front door.
We're still shopping around for inspiration on the path design. These are some ideas Sharon scored off a google search.

Cleaning Up the Yard

Well, at least a start anyway. Here is how the area behind the house looked the other day.Two free ads on craigslist and an hour later the two hutches and the gutters are gone. We're keeping the wood and bricks for future projects. We still need to rebuild a side fence, or hire someone to do it for us. It's been a real pain not having a fenced yard since March.

This morning, Jeff almost finished the big pile of mulch. He's saving the pretty stuff that's left to "finish" after he moves around some more dirt.He also started smashing up the driveway on the side to run a drainpipe for the gutter on that edge of the house. After a while, our neighbor Adrien came over to give him a hand. They ended up pulling out such a large amount of driveway because the tree roots had heaved it up and it was sloped toward the house. Having all that rain draining toward the foundation does not help keep the basement dry.And now we have a large pile of cement blocks; many of the best ones will be used to make stepping "stones" around the yard. We are also hoping to reuse the huge piles of bricks on the property for a path up to the front door from the sidewalk. Here's Jeff trying to dig around the huge walnut tree roots to run a channel for the rain. Shasta also tried to help. She was digging here.Looks like it will work!
