Closet Cheat

Yesterday, in a comment, Debbie asked if I was going to strip the paint in the closet, and I have to admit I was tempted, but ultimately I decided I would rather apply my efforts to more visible areas.

Instead, I'm cheating and painting the woodwork with stain-colored paint. I put on one coat this evening and I'll apply another coat tomorrow. Then I'll probably shellac over the paint so it has the same sheen as the wood in the rest of the room.

There was one area on the inside of the door casing where Jeff had removed most of the paint, so I sanded and shellacked that area first before applying paint just in case I change my mind someday and need to strip the woodwork. =)

I did strip and stain the shelf board. I'll shellac that tomorrow along with the closet.

  1. Hi Sharon,

It looks great! I never knew there was stain paint. It really looks like you stained it!

You call yourself a "Closet Cheat", my husband & I are "floor cheats". We want to replace all our carpet with hardwood flooring but don't have $10,000-$20,000 dollars laying around. Especially with a son who will be in college in a few years. Soooo, we ripped up about 75% of our carpet, which was 14-20 years old, removed all the staples, tacking strips, and tons of carpet pad dust; and painted the subfloors with a floor paint from Sherwin Williams in the French Roast color. It turned out beautifully! We bought area rugs according to each rooms decore to keep things cozy, but you can still see the wood because the rugs don't cover the whole room. The house feels so much lighter and cleaner!

I can't wait to see your finished closet. And your masterbedroom windows from the previous post look beautiful too! :-)

    Fondly,
    Debbie

  2. Where did you get stain paint? Who makes it? I love how the wood turned out; it is beautiful!

  3. It's not stain paint. It's just regular paint tinted to mostly match our stain. I think the exact color is "Copper Mine." Sorry for the confusion.

Though, apparently, you can get opaque stain to apply to unfinished wood. We used some of that on our fence last summer.
